Frauenlager (Womens Camp) at Bergen-Belsen KZ/Gedenkstätte

In August 1944, the Frauenlager was established due to the mass evacuations of other camps. Initially there were insufficient Blocks to accommodate these women and they were housed in tents (Zeltlager) in the open ground that previously had been used for Soviet POW's. On 07 November 1944 there was a severe storm that damaged the majority of the tents, so the women were relocated into Block 42 (Shoe recycling by the Schuhkommando ceased) and the Sternlager was forced to vacate 6-8 blocks in order to house the remainder.

The last remaining block of the Frauenlager (Block 47) was destroyed by fire by the British Army 21 May 1945.
